Eric LaRoye is vooral bekend als goud- en zilversmid, maar hij is ook actief als fotograaf, een verrassende combinatie die zijn werk extra gelaagd maakt. Zijn achtergrond in metaalbewerking weerspiegelt zich in zijn fotografie: met oog voor vorm, materiaal en textuur weet hij zelfs de meest alledaagse objecten een sculpturaal karakter te geven.
In zijn fotografisch werk focust LaRoye zich vaak op elementen uit de openbare ruimte: architectuur, infrastructuur, bouwplaatsen en het materieel dat zich daar bevindt. Vanop korte afstand, en soms van héél dichtbij, weet hij beelden te vangen die ons doorgaans ontgaan. Wat voor velen slechts een fragment van een bouwwerf of een stuk straatmeubilair is, wordt in zijn foto’s een fascinerend beeld: ruw of verfijnd, in subtiel of uitgesproken licht, met aandacht voor kleur, vorm en textuur.
LaRoye nodigt ons uit om langer te kijken. Om stil te staan bij die onverwachte momenten waarin een object zich lostrekt van zijn context en een eigen, autonome schoonheid krijgt. Door het juiste kader en de juiste timing te kiezen, tilt hij vluchtige beelden op tot iets blijvends, beelden die sculpturaal ogen en vaak zelfs als kleine kunstwerken op zich kunnen worden gezien. Soms worden ze subtiel aangepast, waardoor er opnieuw een ander beeld ontstaat.
Deze foto’s zijn ontstaan uit aandacht, verwondering en het plezier van kijken. Beelden die normaal onopgemerkt zouden blijven, krijgen hier een podium, en nodigen de toeschouwer uit om anders te kijken naar het alledaagse.

Eric LaRoye est surtout connu comme orfèvre, mais il est également actif en tant que photographe, une combinaison surprenante qui donne à son travail une profondeur supplémentaire. Son expérience dans le travail du métal se reflète dans sa pratique photographique : avec un regard attentif à la forme, à la matière et à la texture, il parvient à conférer un caractère sculptural aux objets les plus ordinaires.
Dans son travail photographique, LaRoye se concentre souvent sur des éléments de l’espace public : l’architecture, les infrastructures, les chantiers de construction et le matériel qui s’y trouve. À courte distance, et parfois de très près, il capte des images qui, habituellement, nous échappent. Ce qui, pour la plupart, n’est qu’un fragment de chantier ou un élément de mobilier urbain devient, à travers son objectif, une image fascinante : brute ou raffinée, baignée dans une lumière subtile ou marquée, toujours avec une attention particulière portée à la couleur, à la forme et à la matière.
LaRoye nous invite à regarder plus longtemps. À nous arrêter sur ces moments inattendus où un objet semble se détacher de son contexte pour révéler une beauté propre, autonome. En choisissant soigneusement le cadrage et le bon moment, il élève des instants fugaces au rang d’images durables, des images qui évoquent la sculpture et qui, souvent, peuvent être perçues comme de véritables œuvres à part entière. Parfois, il les modifie subtilement, faisant ainsi émerger une nouvelle image.
Ces photographies sont nées de l’attention, de l’émerveillement et du plaisir de regarder. Des images qui, en temps normal, passeraient inaperçues, trouvent ici une scène, et invitent le spectateur à porter un regard différent sur le quotidien.

Eric LaRoye is best known as a gold- and silversmith, but he is also active as a photographer, a interesting combination that adds depth to his work. His background in metalworking clearly informs his photography: with a keen eye for form, material and texture, he manages to give even the most ordinary objects a sculptural quality.
LaRoye often focuses his lens on elements found in public space: architecture, infrastructure, construction sites and the tools and materials present there. From a short distance, and sometimes from extremely close up, he captures images that would otherwise go unnoticed. What for most people is merely a fragment of a building site or a piece of street furniture, becomes a compelling image in his photographs: rough or refined, in subtle or dramatic light, always with attention to colour, shape and surface.
LaRoye invites us to slow down and look again. To pause at those unexpected moments when an object seems to detach itself from its surroundings and reveal its own, autonomous beauty. Through thoughtful framing and careful timing, he elevates fleeting impressions into something lasting, images that appear sculptural and often resemble small artworks in themselves. At times, he subtly alters them, allowing a new image to emerge altogether.
These photographs are born from attention, wonder, and the simple joy of looking. Images that would normally go unnoticed are given a stage here, inviting the viewer to see the everyday in a different light.
